French donors, Red Cross, Habitat come together for storm victims

DAANBANTAYAN, Cebu—At least 200 families that were displaced by Supertyphoon “Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan) woke up to brand new homes almost two years to the day the killer storm devastated the Visayas. It was a day of gladness as well as sadness as residents remembered what happened when Yolanda hit land on Nov. 8, 2013, destroying their homes and livelihood. Fernanda Cuyos recalled that before the onslaught of the typhoon, her family—including two of their grandchildren, aged 3 and 7—evacuated to the extension campus of Cebu Technological University (CTU). “We were very scared. When Yolanda blew off the roof of the CTU gymnasium, we had to run to another building. After the typhoon passed, we checked our house and found that it was destroyed when two coconut trees fell on it,” said Cuyos. Red Cross, partners to unveil village for Yolanda survivors

NEARLY two years after super typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) ripped through the Philippines, 128 families who lost their homes are moving into new, permanent houses with the support of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and its partners. The Red Cross Village in Barangay Paypay, Daanbantayan, Cebu will be inaugurated on Friday, Nov. 6, with Richard J. Gordon, PRC chairman; Charlie Ayco, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity Philippines; and Mayor Augusto Corro of Daanbantayan leading the ceremony. Representatives from local authorities, French Red Cross, France-Philippines United Actions and French companies will also be present. The village is a unique project and the first fully developed resettlement site for typhoon survivors in the Philippines. The 128 30-square-meter housing units come with a bathroom and latrine, including septic tank, and a decentralized treatment system for grey and used waters that make released waters harmless to the environment. Turnover ceremonies of Site 1 and Site 2 in Daanbantayan on November 6

Two years after typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines, the two first FP-UA villages are ready to be turned over to their beneficiary families. On November 8 2013, typhoon Haiyan devastated the Visayas and France-Philippines United Action was subsequently created in order to coordinate the relief and rehabilitation efforts lead by the French business community. FP-UA focused on rehabilitation and relocation projects in Daanbatayan, North of Cebu, which was badly hit by the typhoon. Today, two villages of a total of 202 sturdy homes are ready to be delivered to families in Daanbantayan. The first village is a partnership with Habitat for Humanity Philippines, which built 74 disaster-resilient houses specially designed by Architect E. Florentino as well as a multi-purpose center in barangay Agujo. FP-UA’s new partner on Site 1: ParexGroup, Inc.

ParexGroup, Inc is the newest partner of FP-UA. It is donating some of its DAVCO K10 PU Plus product, a waterproofing coating, for Site 1, barangay Agujo, in Daanbantayan. Habitat for Humanity Philippines, will spread the product on the roofs of the houses to increase their resilience to rain. This village includes 74 permanent homes and one Multi-Purpose Center. It is part of a rehabilitation and relocation project which will benefit families who lost their homes to typhoon Haiyan in November 2013 and/or communities that still live in zones at risk during cyclones such as seashores. Launch of the French Chamber Foundation

Six months after President Hollande announced the conversion of France-Philippines United Action (FP-UA) into the French Chamber Foundation, the organization has officially been presented to the members of the Filipino-French business community. On September 9, 2015, the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Philippines announced the creation of its Foundation, which will perpetuate the actions of FP-UA. This launch was made official during a breakfast meeting organized by the French Chamber in partnership with Banco De Oro, Inc. to welcome the French expatriates back to Manila after their summer break. This announcement comes 6 months after French President François Hollande visited the Philippines in order to build diplomatic momentum ahead of the COP21 Climate Change conference, which will be held in Paris at the end of the year. The MoU for Site 3 has been signed and the project in Bogo is thus set to start

On September 8 2015, the Memorandum of Agreement which binds Cités-Unies France, France Philippines-United Action, Habitat for Humanity and the Municipality of Bogo was signed by Mayor Celestino E. Martinez Jr. of Bogo City ; thereby officially launching FP-UA’s Site 3 project.   This site will be located on a 1 hectare lot in barangay Cayang, in the municipality of Bogo situated in the north of Cebu Island. The village will include 100 houses on the same model  as the houses already buit on Site 1 in barangay Agujo. This hyperbolic paraboloid house design was developed by Architect E. Florentino after typhoon Haiyan in order to resist to intensity 8 earthquakes and high velocity 275-300kph winds. The NGO Habitat for Humanity, to which Architect Florentino offered the design model, will be in charge of building the facilities.
